About

ON THE SAND

is an initiative by a collective of global artists who lives in Rotterdam with the aim of celebrating the freedom to create.

The organisation has an open mind with a multi cultural character and organises broad a variety of cultural projects and experiments. On The Sand exists in – and highly values - it’s temporary nature; it is merely an idea, supported by a great network of artist from different disciplines and backgrounds.

On The Sand expands its field of activity worldwide through international collaborations.

Since the first years of its establishment by Kivanc Sarikus, On The Sand has been hosting interdisciplinary artprojects and aims to produce and co-produce art in partnership.

On The Sand has done cultural diplomacy projects. One of them was the realisation of art

projects in 2013, which was part of the 400th anniversary of the relations between the

Netherlands and Türkiye.

On The Sand is a group of international émigré artists who came together with the

Rotterdam municipality and spotlicht team members to transform an old supermarket

into a temporary cultural and art centre.

The team, which temporarily carries out cultural and artistic activities with the On The Sand

signboard, has managed to reach more people than its target audience with activities such

as concerts, theatre and film screenings, workshops (movement, short film making,

permaculture, jazz jam sessions), exhibitions and events, mostly involving émigré artists. It

has had a positive impact on the dynamics of social interaction in Rotterdam (2009-2013)

On The Sand also organised children's theatre productions and reading theatres. As a result,

the Dutch language was passed on to new generations through literature and theatre.
