Dialogue Project - Istanbul

The Dialogue Project unites émigré professional artists who aspire to be a part of the creative industry in cosmopolitan cities with high migration rates. Making stops in major European cities such as Istanbul, Berlin, Amsterdam, Brussels, and Vienna, the project promotes a sense of community with the participation of émigré artists.

As part of the Dialogue Project - Istanbul, émigré artists from diverse cultural and artistic backgrounds gather under the same roof to share their autobiographical stories with the audience. Hosting the performance, Istanbul takes a leading role in the Dialogue Project, which combines documentary theatre, a rare form of performing arts, with contemporary theatre, by serving as a platform that allows an aesthetically and fictionally rich experience to take place.

Émigré artists use sound installations, visual arts, and live music in this interdisciplinary performance to create an illusion of dialogue, sharing their autobiographical stories, observations, and experiences about Istanbul during their time in the city.

The stories are presented to the audience in three parts: "Intro," "Journey," and "Home / Another World.” The Dialogue Project aims to empower a discourse of inclusion, diversity, and unity. It also seeks to strengthen the bonds between immigrant and refugee groups and the wider society and to promote dialogue and interaction among them, as its name implies.

The Road and the Traveller

(Yol ve Yolcu in Turkish) is my personal music show in which I travel, together with the public,

through the music and poetry of great Turkish artists, who spend their lives living all over of the world.

The visions of these great artists (like Nazım Hikmet, Barış Manço, Neşet Ertaş, Cem Karaca, Tayfun Karatekin, Zülfu Livaneli..) and my own experiences as a traveling musician come together in a live-looping performance of music, poetry and story telling.

I made the show for both Turkish and European public. To share my own experiences as a travelling musician, but mainly to inspire you and invite you to connect with each other on an emotional and personal level.

The show takes one and a half hour, and guest artist will ad their part to it. The main language is Turkish, but via the translations everything is open for people form different backgrounds.

On the Sand  In-House Projects

Music &  Sound

On The Sand is supported by a lot of professional musicians. Since the founder of the organisation, Kivanc Sarikus, is a former student of CODARTS Conservatory as well as the Dokuz Eylul University Conservatory of Izmir, many of his friends and colleagues are now closely connected to On The Sand. This has resulted in many high quality music concerts and projects from the very beginning of On The Sand.

Music Nights and concerts

By now, we organise a thematic Music Night every month. In the past year we’ve created an Indian Music Night, a Classical Music Night, a Jazz- and improvisation Night, an Open Stage night for local talents,  World music and many Jamm-sessions with a broad variety of musicians. We organise more of these nights, added by Live-looping Jamm sessions and Music Experiments yet to be discovered. On The Sand also collaborates with Folkhouse Matrix Rotterdam which is most prominent  new age concert space in Rotterdam.

Performing Arts

On The Sand focuses on new wave storytelling, documentary theatre, text development combined contemporary  art forms. Please see ''Yol ve Yolcu'' The Road and the Traveller and Dialogue Project series . This two projects are migrant-led projects. Collects post-immigrant stories in Europe and worldwide.

Our Performing arts department organises work shop series in acting, movement, play writing, directing, puppet making/playing, shadow theatre  and new dramaturgy.

Monster and Missy Reading Theatre

The Reading Theatre is a cheerful performance that helps children (8-10 years old) in a playful way to master the Dutch language. OnTheSand developed the project directly with MoodyDoodle, a Dutch company for children's stories. We use MoodyDoodles book 'Monster en Meisje' as a startingpoint as a reference making theatre for children. Young audiences  are practicing  language by listening, structuring a poem.

Film Screening &

Live stream events

On The Sand likes the art of moviemaking and the use of media in a broader perspective. Therefore we shoot short movies or clips ourselves, and are equally enthusiastic to support talented audio visual students (Willem de Kooning, Piet Zwart) and local filmmakers. They can use our space to present their works to the audience and/or ask for our help by developing it. For example, our space has been used several times for casting scenes.

On The Sand helps with Matrix Rotterdam live stream events. Cooperates with Yeni Perform which is digital theatre venue based in Istanbul.
